The Importance of Rest Days
Posted onWhen you’re on a roll at the gym, smashing your PBs, hitting your goals, and seeing results, it can be hard to take a step back and rest. Your adrenaline is at an all-time high, and you want to keep going, but this is the worst thing you could do. Rest days are an essential part of your training. If you overdo it, you will pay for it sooner or later, and it won’t be pretty.
You are doing more damage than good
When you hit the gym, you create microscopic tears in your muscles, which enable your body to adapt and become stronger. These tears aren’t the problem, but these micro-injuries can become real injuries that will inevitably stop you from training, or cause severe damage.
There’s a condition called Overtraining Syndrome (OTS), which is caused by doing too much work and not allowing your body to rest and recover. This can result in mood changes, frequent injuries, and a lack of motivation.
Morale keeps you moving
When you start training, your morale will be at an all-time high, but if you are doing it every day, it becomes more of a chore. Unless you are a machine, it’s not possible to maintain such high motivation over a long period of time. You end up burning out and getting into a worse position than you were in at the beginning.
